Candle care

Get the most from your candle

Tips for a happy candle

Properly caring for your candle will not only help it burn longer but will also keep your candle looking beautiful and clean. Here are some tips for getting the most out of your Oak & Ember candle!

1. Prevent tunneling

When lighting your Oak & Ember candle for the first time, allow the wax to melt to all sides of the vessel - this will help minimize tunneling. Believe it or not, wax holds "memory". When the wax can't melt evenly across the top on the first burn, it will continue to pool towards the middle.

2. Trim your wick

Unlike traditional wicks, it's especially important to trim wood wicks. Each time you light your candle, trim the wick to 1/8". This helps the wick burn most efficiently. We recommend using a wick trimmer to preserve your wick and candle (if you don't have a wick trimmer on hand, scissors, or simply pinching the burnt edges off works fine).

3.The 4 hour rule

As a general safety rule, we do not recommend burning your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. This also helps you get the most life out of your candle. While burning your candle, be sure to keep it away from drafty areas, or any flammable surfaces and items. Keep away from kids and pets, and beware that the vessel may get hot while burning.

4. When to retire your candle

We recommend retiring your candle when there's roughly 1/2" of wax left. Retiring your candle doesn't mean it's gone for good though. Once your candle is finished burning, place it in the freezer. This will allow the wax to shrink for easy removal. Use a butter knife or spoon to remove the wax, wick, and wick clip, then clean your vessel thoroughly with soap and water.

Our vessels are meant to be refilled or reused as beautiful pieces in your home.

5. Proper storage

UV rays and temperature fluctuations from sunlight can cause the wax to discolor, or affect the fragrance strength and smell. When not burning your candle, find a cool, dark space away from direct sunlight to store your candle.
